Employee wellbeing has become a strategic priority for many organizations. High levels of workplace stress affect not only employees’ health, but also productivity, engagement and staff retention, generating significant costs for organizations and society. In Europe, work-related stress is one of the most frequently reported work-related health problems. For this reason, more companies are beginning to design a Corporate Wellbeing Plan as a structured way to create healthier and more supportive work environments.

However, implementing an effective wellbeing strategy is not always easy. Many organizations launch initiatives with good intentions but struggle to achieve real impact or long-term change. In many cases, wellbeing actions remain isolated initiatives rather than part of a broader organizational strategy.

Within the StressOut-project, partners have developed a Corporate Wellbeing Guide to support employers and managers in designing structured approaches to prevent workplace stress and burnout. Based on this experience, several common mistakes often appear when organizations try to implement a Corporate Wellbeing Plan.

One frequent mistake is treating wellbeing as a one-off initiative, such as organizing a workshop, a well-being day or offering access to a well-being app. While these initiatives can be useful, they rarely create lasting change if wellbeing is not integrated into everyday organizational practices and decision-making processes.

Another common issue is focusing only on individual stress management, for example through mindfulness or resilience training, without addressing the organizational factors that often cause stress. Workload, unclear roles, limited autonomy or ineffective communication can significantly influence employees’ wellbeing and need to be considered in any comprehensive strategy.

Organizations also sometimes design well-being strategies without involving employees, even though they are the ones who best understand the pressures of their daily work. Engaging employees through surveys, focus groups or participatory workshops helps identify the real sources of stress and design more relevant solutions.

Similarly, the role of leadership is often underestimated. Managers strongly influence workplace culture, expectations and psychological safety within teams. Without leadership support and awareness, well-being initiatives may struggle to gain credibility.

Other challenges include overlooking organizational culture, trying to implement too many initiatives at once, and failing to measure the impact of wellbeing actions over time.

Developing a Corporate Wellbeing Plan usually involves several stages, including assessing workplace stress factors, co-creating solutions with employees, designing and implementing targeted actions, and regularly monitoring results to ensure continuous improvement.

De StressOut Corporate Wellbeing Guide provides practical tools and recommendations to help organizations move from isolated initiatives to a structured wellbeing strategy.
